May 25
Claus had to work again today but
got home early afternoon. We walked the beach instead of the road to Skovhuset,
the burger stand we visited yesterday, and had beer and a ristet pølse (roasted
sausage) with everything on it for lunch.
We walked back along the beach where there was just enough breeze to
make the temperature comfortable. In the
evening we went to Skælskør to visit
Claus’ mother Lis for dinner. We were sitting
outside enjoying wine before dinner, a roe deer walked by the house and a large
rabbit, similar to our jackrabbit, hopped down the street. We had a delicious
meal of roasted chicken and all the trimmings.
Lis told us to walk down to the harbor while she cleaned off the table
and prepared coffee. This weekend is
Memorial Day in Denmark, the same 3 day holiday we have in the States and there
was a festival going on. As we
approached the harbor we passed the ambulance / fire station where everyone
knew Claus. One of the ambulance men on
duty recognized us from the Christmas party we attended when visiting 1 ½ years
ago and he proudly showed us around the station and explained the equipment. The Skælskør festival had a large display of
restored classic cars and motorcycles.
The majority of cars were British sports cars, some with unfamiliar
names, and they were immaculate. There
was also a beautifully restored Studebaker sedan. The streets and square were packed with
families and all were in a festive mood.
We walked back to Lis’ house and had coffee outside and watched the
firework display. It was 10:30pm and
still fairly light but the fireworks were good anyway. We got back to Claus’ house in Salgelse and
stayed up too late talking.
